Alex Scott Porter Design LLC specializes in residences; We exist to make your house or apartment a home . We provide full design services ranging from helping you figure out your desired project scope, to full architectural design, to selecting furniture and artwork. While we prefer to be involved in all stages of the design and construction process, we are available to consult on any task along the way. Our approach is extremely detail-oriented. We create a thorough set of drawings and specifications that leave nothing up to the contractor’s imagination. While we do have very strong opinions about the integrity of design, we also deeply respect our clients desires, needs and personal styles. We view each project as a collaboration with both our clients and the craftspeople who realize it.

PEOPLE

Founding Principal Alex Scott Porter holds a Masters of Architecture from Columbia and a Bachelor of Arts cum laude  from the University of Pennsylvania. At Columbia, she was distinguished with the Excellence in Design Award.  She also studied Fine Arts at SACI in Italy and completed coursework at Cornell and Yale.

Porter first got her hands dirty by working at The New Jersey Barn Company, a company that reclaimed antique farm buildings. In the field she disassembled them and in the design-studio she worked to adapt them for other uses. She then served as a Project Architect for several well regarded New York firms including The Polshek Partnership, Francois de Menil and George Ranalli before founding her own practice. She taught design at Columbia and Barnard Colleges and was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Architecture at Pratt from 2000 to 2002.

Porter's interest in domestic architecture began way before she began any formal training. Old houses were an obsession in the Porter household, so much so that she lived in a 19th century Brooklyn brownstone, a Maine farmhouse (with no plumbing), an 18th century Nantucket whaling cottage, a 15th Century stone farmhouse in France and a former sewing factory in Chelsea, NY all before she turned eighteen. This has informed her approach to design and served as a strong counterpoint to her sustaining interest in modern design.
